Mostly chooks

Happy New Year!

It's been a little while, so I thought I would catch you up.

Left to right; Light girl, Fluffy, Little girl, Grey girl, Old girl. Lovely names, haha! Old girl is the ex-Green Eggs free-range farm girl. She's not that old really! As you can see, they all get along great now.

Only, Little girl turned into this;

Yep, growing into a big boy by the looks of things. Oh dear. And who is behind him?

Three beautiful Dorkings! I picked them up last week Thursday. Absolutely lovely chooks. They're large and docile and there hasn't been any problems with them joining the flock at all.

Fluffy and Old girl are in the background. The Dorkings are still a little wary of me, but they'll come around. :)

As for the eggs..

The little white one on the left is the Dorking egg, the large one on the right is Old girl's egg, and the top one is a shop bought large egg (from the 700g box). We're getting around 3 eggs a day at the moment, and the youngest of the chooks should start laying soon. We think Grey girl laid her first egg on Christmas Day.

In other news.. the chicks are growing fast. They're 3.5 weeks old now and with the hot weather, havn't needed the heat-lamp for a few days now at least! We're in the process of making them a new home.

Well, mostly Marty is!

..and I've done the painting!

Hopefully we'll finish it off this weekend.. because the Wyandottes are more than ready to explore the great unknown world outside their box in the loungeroom!

Of course, we'll keep them in the shade on days like yesterday (or even bring them inside). It got to 40°C (104°F) yesterday with a very strong hot Northerly wind that sadly destroyed the corn and comfrey in the front garden bed. :(

We're not looking forward to this summer's heat. Thankfully all the chooks are fine - the corn can always be re-planted. :)

Until next time!

  3. Sad about the garden. If it is any consolation, my third attempt at corn this year was blighted by frost last week, so no corn for me either. Your chooks are looking great - I love the Dorkings. They look like they would be a good meat bird too ...

    And 'little girl' will make a nice meal when s/he gets a bit bigger ...
