Bakers Oven Installed & Working!

Installing the flue was a little more time consuming than we expected (isn't everything!). We spent almost a whole day cutting the fiber cement to fit into the chimney. Uhh, we completely messed it up the first time!! Our disaster below:

(How embarrassing!)

Never mind! Marty got some great advice and a handy tool from a few friends and we were back with a vengeance the next day!! Our much better version:

We shoved-in all the flue pieces then screwed the fiber cement to the inside of the chimney. Gee, that makes it sound so easy! :) The paint will need a little touch-up..

We realised that we would have a lot of trouble getting the flue in (or out, for that matter) with 6" pipe all the way nearly to the top.. so I took a little drive down to Ballarat to swap a piece of 6" with a piece of 5". It was 4pm, and I wasn't going to wait another day to get this flue in!! I made it there 1/2 hour before they closed, and was home around 7:30pm. We ate dinner, and then I climbed onto the roof (for the n'th time lately) to attach the cowl onto the flue as Marty pushed it through the bottom.

Of course, none of this would have been an issue if it wasn't for the chimney pot. Rather than remove it (which would have been much easier!), we wanted to keep it. After all, it may be an original part of the house!

The one on the left is the cowl from the gas heater that use to be in the loungeroom, and the pot on the right looks almost identical to the chimney pot on the other (older) chimney at the front of the house. I still think it was worth the effort! I'd imagine we're the only house in Stawell who has a chimney pot with a chinaman's hat cowl over it. hehe

So, the verdict? You tell me!

Yep, there are pizzas in that there oven! Yay!

It has taken a little getting use to! It certainly warms the room once it's going, and has done everything from boil water in the kettle to steam veggies to bake pizzas and banana muffins! I think it's safe to say we're happy with it. :)

We've "moved-in" to the kitchen (computers and all) and will definitely keep warm for the rest of the winter. (We could also gain a few kilo's at this rate, too!)

Until next time!

  1. YEA!!! I am so glad that you two have your oven going. A lot of work but so worth it. It's great that you kept the old chimney pot. And those pizzas sure look good. Are they home made?

PS. Manda, I love the way you write the blogs. You make them so interesting. Kinda makes me feel like I'm there with you. I really miss you and Marty.
